Mumbai Airport Incident: DGCA De-rosters ATCO Following Runway Near-Miss

Mumbai Airport Incident

MUMBAI: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has taken decisive action by de-rostering an Air Traffic Control officer (ATCO) from Mumbai following a potentially catastrophic incident involving two aircraft on the same runway.

The incident unfolded at Mumbai airport on Saturday morning when an Air India aircraft was accelerating for takeoff as an IndiGo aircraft landed behind it on the same runway. The Air India flight AI657, destined for Thiruvananthapuram, had initiated its takeoff roll and was rapidly gaining speed when IndiGo flight 6E5053, arriving from Indore, crossed the runway threshold for landing. The close call was captured on camera by plane spotters.

The pilot in command continued with the approach and landing and followed ATC instructions. At IndiGo, passenger safety is of paramount importance to us, and we have reported the incident as per procedure.”

A statement from Air India regarding the incident is still awaited.
