Dedicated to the rights of differently-abled players, Ghazal Khan completes 10 years of transformative work in differently-abled cricket.

A Decade of Transforming Lives Through Divyang Cricket

New Delhi: Ghazal Khan, a stalwart in advocating for differently-abled athletes, marks a decade of transformative work in Divyang Cricket. Over the past 10 years, her unwavering dedication has not only elevated the status of disability cricket in India but has also set a global precedent for inclusivity in sports.

Ghazal’s journey with the Divyang Cricket Control Board of India (DCCBI) began in 2014, a time when the opportunities for differently-abled cricketers were scarce. Her commitment to providing a platform for these athletes has been instrumental in changing the landscape of disability cricket. Recognized for her relentless advocacy, she was appointed CEO of DCCBI in 2021, where she led the organization to new heights, organizing national and international tournaments that highlighted the talents of Divyang cricketers.

Her leadership has been a game-changer, fostering an environment where differently-abled athletes can thrive. The Indian Divyang Cricket team’s victory in the first-ever Asia Cup in 2015 and the Indian Wheelchair Cricket team’s runner-up finish in 2019 are testaments to her impact. These milestones have not only raised the profile of disability cricket but have also challenged societal perceptions about disability in sports. Ghazal has witnessed firsthand how Divyang Cricket has not only provided a platform for differently-abled athletes but has also profoundly transformed their lives. Among the many inspiring stories, a few stand out, reflecting the power of sport to heal, uplift, and inspire.

Ghazal sharing few stories said, “We have a wheelchair cricketer Lalit Pathak, a wheelchair cricketer who embodies the spirit of perseverance. After a tragic train accident, Lalit lost both of his legs and fell into a deep depression, plagued by suicidal thoughts. However, his life took a transformative turn when he joined wheelchair cricket. The sport gave him a renewed purpose—a vision to play for India. This vision saved his life, turning his despair into hope and his struggle into strength. Today, Lalit’s journey serves as a powerful reminder that physical limitations do not define one’s potential.”

Another inspiring story is that of Amir, whose talent to bowl with his leg as he lost both hands in a tragic incident recently caught the attention of none other than Sachin Tendulkar. The way Sachin appreciated Amir’s skill is a reward not just for Amir but for all Divyang cricketers. Amir’s story is now a beacon of hope, showing that with determination and hard work, recognition and success are within reach. His rise to stardom is inspiring countless others, proving that their dreams are valid and achievable.

Ghazal further added, “These are just two stories among thousands. We have over 4,000 Divyang cricketers across the country, each with their own unique story. These players live to play cricket, and cricket has given them a reason to live. It’s not just a sport for them; it’s a lifeline, a source of pride, and a platform to showcase their abilities to the world. Every day, I am reminded of the incredible impact that Divyang Cricket has on the lives of these athletes, and I am deeply honored to be a part of their journey.”

Beyond DCCBI, Ghazal’s influence extends internationally as the Secretary of International Affairs at the International Cricket Council for the Physically Challenged and Vice Chairperson of the International Council of Wheelchair Cricket. Her work has inspired many and created pathways for the differently-abled to achieve their dreams.

Ghazal’s decade-long journey is a powerful example of how determination, resilience, and a commitment to inclusivity can create lasting change. Her efforts continue to inspire a new generation of differently-abled athletes, ensuring that their contributions to sports are recognized and celebrated.
