Jamshedpur, June 7, 2024: Tata Steel Utilities and Infrastructure Services Limited has inaugurated the Upcycling Centre at ECC Flats, Kadma, as an extension of their successful Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (RRR) initiative. The RRR Centre, launched last year, has made significant strides in promoting sustainable waste management practices. Building on this success, the company is now taking its efforts to the next level by establishing the Upcycling Centre, where collected waste is transformed into valuable products, creating a circular economy within the community.
Key Activities Undertaken at the Upcycling Centre:
Employment and Empowerment
The company has employed a woman facing financial challenges to stitch bags from the collected clothes. She has successfully stitched thousands of reusable bags, providing her with a stable income while contributing to reducing plastic bag usage.
Footwear Revitalization
A skilled person has been engaged to make minor repairs to the footwear donated by residents. This not only extends the life of the footwear but also provides the person with steady employment, supporting local craftsmanship.
Plastic Recycling
Collected plastic waste is forwarded to a recycler in Adityapur, where it is converted into paver blocks. This initiative helps in reducing plastic pollution and supports the construction of sustainable infrastructure. Additionally, the company has compressed Multi-Layered Plastic (MLP) to create sheets, which have been used to make bins for the collection of reused items at the Upcycling Centre. Each bin, with a capacity of 200 liters, consumes 30 kg of plastic.

Textile Upcycling
The company has partnered with M/s Hathkarga Udyog, who process the collected clothes through a shredder, converting them into fresh yarn. This yarn is then used to create various products such as foot mats, durries, bedsheets, and kaleens. This collaboration not only promotes recycling but also preserves traditional weaving techniques.
